Route 347 Surveying Services

Suffolk County, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York State Department of Transportation

HAKS is providing the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) with surveying and mapping for final design of Route 347 in Region 10 in Suffolk County. This was the largest right-of-way (ROW) mapping contract ever awarded by NYSDOT.

More than 1,500 ROW maps were produced, which were used in the final design for reconstruction and widening of Route 347 between Northern State Parkway and NY Route 25A, approximately 20 miles.   The $400 million project is being reconstructed in segments. The survey team is coordinating with Phase V-VI designers and with Region 10 ROW and design project managers.

The project also involves the use of a global positioning system (GPS) to establish a primary horizontal control network and to calculate coordinates and elevation of pre-established photo control targets for aerial mapping. The primary vertical control for the project was established by using digital levels. The secondary horizontal control was established by using total stations.

Four field crews highly experienced in mapping to NYSDOT standards are working on the project. The team employs six in-house field crews, many other experienced office personnel, hardware and state-of-the-art software to produce the numerous maps needed to cover the large project area. HAKS is providing quality assurance for the project as well as survey crew members and ROW mappers. ROW maps were prepared using MicroStation V8, InRoads Survey and InRoads.
