Hunters Point Portal Laser Scanning

Hunters Point Avenue in Long Island City, Queens, is served by the IRT No. 7 (Flushing) subway line.  The tunnel portal is at the eastern end of the station where the No. 7 train transitions from an underground subway to an elevated train. HAKS performed a laser scan of the Hunters Point portal as part of a flood mitigation project for New York City Transit that included a feasibility study of nine subway stations.  We established a survey baseline tied to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) and conducted a survey at platform and track level from this baseline.

The laser scan of the portal was necessary for the development of an elevation view of the tunnel opening.  Precise measurements of the opening and surrounding structures were extracted from the scan data and views of the portal were created.
