NYCHA Fire Suppression System Retrofit

Manhattan/Queens/Bronx, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York City Housing Authority

HAKS provided MEP services to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), including replacement and equipment upgrades to the commercial kitchen fire-suppression systems, exhaust hoods, exhaust fans and ancillary MEP systems in 11 buildings in three boroughs. An investigation of related New York City Department of Buildings and Fire Department violations was performed and resolved. Services also included recommendations for architectural and structural modifications. In addition, gas load calculations based on kitchen equipment load were performed for correct gas-pipe sizing.

Open violations were corrected and code compliance issues were documented and resolved. We corrected deficiencies in the existing kitchen fire suppression systems, exhaust hoods, exhaust fans, grease components for ductwork and fans, odor migration and room pressurization, ventilation, operating controls, electrical wiring, emergency egress and life safety, fire alarm devices, gas components (supply, valves, alarms and cut-offs), fire stopping, fire dampers, structural supports and ancillary MEP systems.

Services included:

  • Detailed commercial kitchen site investigation and assessment
  • Provision of new fire suppression systems for the range hoods
  • Design of fire suppression system, range hood, duct and fan exhaust systems as per NFPA 96, NFPA 17A, NFPA 72, and New York City mechanical, fuel, and fire codes
