Milltown Fire Station Expansion Study

Milltown, New Jersey<br style='line-height:2px'>Milltown Fire Department

The Milltown Fire Department is part of a growing vibrant community in central New Jersey that has seen an economic and housing boom over the last 20 years. The existing fire department building was built in 1893 and included space dedicated to a Borough Hall. Previous expansion projects for the fire department have included taking over the original Borough Hall space when a new facility was built on another site and adding an additional fire engine bay to the building in the mid-20th century. Most of the auxiliary services for the department have been moved into two adjacent residential buildings.

HAKS is investigating options for a $3.6 million expansion of existing facilities by adding a new fire station to the property and possibly renovating the existing historic fire house. We were assigned the task of exploring multiple options for locating the new building on a restricted property site both in size and location before going into design and construction. The study includes a thorough cost analysis for all work associated with each of the schemes to help the fire department choose the appropriate scheme and maintain the intended budget.

The program requirements for the new fire station include four fire engine bays with adjacent associated equipment areas including a radio tower. The department has also requested multiple public meeting rooms, offices, kitchen facilities and storage areas as part of the building program. The studies will also explore the possible expansion of the department to include full-time fire fighters who will require sleeping facilities.
