Rachel Carson Junior High School (Q237) Roof Replacement

Rachel Carson Intermediate School (Q237) in Flushing, Queens, has an enrollment of 1,109 students in grades 6-8 and special education. The East-West School of International Studies is located on the fourth floor of the building, and has a student enrollment of 652. HAKS provided architectural services for a roof replacement to address a failed roof system due to water infiltration at the roof decks.

The $4.5 million project required full demolition of the roof system and installation of a cold fluid applied IRMA system at the roof and a membrane at the interior concrete parapet. At the exterior walls at the setback roofs, three courses of brick at the base of the wall were removed to install the membrane at the back-up wall. The exterior parapet received “breathable” potassium silicate mineral paint. The installation of the liquid membrane at the parapet walls and exterior walls sealed the roof and walls against future water infiltration.
