P.S. X036 Unionport Full Program ADA

P.S. X036 Unionport is located on Castle Hill Avenue in the Bronx and serves Pre-K through fifth grade. The original building was completed in 1901 and the addition was completed in 1925. The four-story, 70,000-square-foot building includes instructional space as well as a basement that houses the cafeteria. The school houses 800 students and approximately 120 staff members. It does not have an elevator and is not Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible.

HAKS will provide architectural and engineering services as part of the “full program accessibility” requirements and guidelines. Improvements include an elevator so that all instructional spaces are accessible to non-ambulatory students. The following will be made accessible:

  • Two regular classrooms per grade, including door width, door hardware, furniture and circulation
  • Specialty rooms such as the music, art and science rooms as well as public assembly spaces such as the library, cafeteria, gymnasium, and auditorium
  • Offices, including the general office and principal’s office
  • Routes to all ADA-accessible rooms and to the new elevator. In addition, the school will be made accessible from the exterior sidewalk to the entrance lobby and elevator via a ramped access
  • One drinking fountain, along with an accessible route on each floor
  • One boys’ toilet and one girls’ toilet, including staff toilets on the first floor and on alternate floors above the first floor
  • School play yards
  • Areas of rescue assistance such as holding areas in case of emergencies or an area in a room within proximity to the stairs. These areas will have two-hour rated enclosures.

The school library is maintained by the Robin Hood Foundation and must not be modified in any way. An ornamental wooden alcove area on the second floor, which has extensive original artwork and intricate woodwork, will also be preserved. The auditorium, which has extensive artwork as well as tiffany chandeliers and intricate marble wall facades, cornices, and lintels, is currently being restored.
