Middlesex County Fire Academy Garage and Administration Building

The Middlesex County Fire Academy is a 26-acre state-of-the-art training facility located in Sayreville, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Since opening in 1992, the academy has trained several thousand firefighters and emergency response personnel from throughout New Jersey as well as individuals from across the country and even firefighters from Colombia, South America. The academy provides classroom instruction and dynamic hands-on training in all aspects of fire, rescue and hazardous materials response.

The administration building includes eight classrooms each with seating for 30 to 40. An amphitheater seats 180. The training grounds consists of a three-story burn building, a five-story training tower, a flammable liquid training area, flammable gas (propane) area, vehicle extrication area, various confined space training areas, a hazardous material and industrial training area as well as a drafting pond.

HAKS provided preliminary design for a new 10-bay pre-engineered garage and two-story administration building. The garage is approximately 11,900 square feet, and the administration building is approximately 7,000 square feet.

The garage will house the Middlesex County agency’s truck storage and one bay will be designated for the county legal department. The garage will be a 1-1/2 story structure with pre-engineered steel and the exterior will be composed of split face CMU block and metal insulated panels. The garage will connect to the administration building immediately adjacent to the existing garage.

The administration building will house the administrative offices of the county agencies and emergency response unit. It will contain an ADA elevator and restroom facilities. The floor plan is designed to maintain the management private offices and conference rooms to one side and the open areas will contain working cubicles to allow natural light from East to West. The administration building will also contain split face CMU and metal panels at the end façade and at the front and rear a combination of storefront and metal panel system defines the administration building. The roof is also a standing seam insulated metal roof system that is slightly higher than the garage building roof.

The entrance to the administration building is defined by a glass canopy and a small parking area that projects outward from the building envelope.

HAKS’ design includes site-civil, structural, architectural, MEP, and interior design using BIM technology.
