SCA School-Based Health Clinics

HAKS is providing architectural and MEP design to the NYC School Construction Authority (SCA) for school-based health clinics as part of its on-call contract for the SCA’s capital improvement program. This effort includes interior renovations, system replacements and reconfiguration of existing high school building spaces. Aiming to maintain safety for students and staff, interior renovation/reconstruction is conducted during summer recess and repair/replacement projects after normal school hours during the academic year. HAKS has designed to medical industry standards five state-of-the-art clinics—complex and comprehensive facilities with thought given to physical adjacencies and the flow between spaces. Examination rooms are designed for the comfort and privacy of young adult patients, color schemes promote a relaxed setting and counseling offices are inviting.

Clinics have two to four exam rooms and two to four counseling offices as well as a diagnostic lab to handle testing and a nurse’s area with a clean/dirty lab. Christopher Columbus H.S. (X415) in the Bronx also has a dental office. The MEP system for each clinic was designed to run independently from those supplying the rest of the building. Some clinics house such facilities as a meeting room with kitchenette, as does Port Richmond H.S. (R445) in Staten Island. At John Adams H.S. (Q480) in Queens, mechanical work included installation of a virtual routing and forwarding heating and cooling system, motorized valve and digital thermostat for heating control and relocation of steam radiators. Electrical work included lighting, power, fire alarm, communications, intrusion alarm and PA system and a new electrical panel. At New Design High School at Seward Park Educational Campus, in Manhattan, a nurse’s office and locker room were combined. Newtown H.S. (Q455) in Queens is eligible to be designated as a landmark by the State Historic Preservation Office. An existing nurse’s office and clinic will be combined to make up a 1,600-square-foot clinic, to be completed in April 2016.
