Bloomingdale Road Reconstruction

Staten Island, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York City Department of Design and Construction

A HAKS-led joint venture provided preliminary and final design to the New York City Department of Design and Construction for the $30 million reconstruction of Bloomingdale Road in Staten Island, a major two-lane arterial with connections to the West Shore Expressway. The design focused on 2 miles of the existing roadway from Arthur Kill to Amboy Roads. Constraints included adjacent wetlands and landmarked properties on both sides of the project area, which are within the Sandy Ground Historic Archeological District.

The joint venture team approached the project with emphasis on four critical components:

  • Community outreach
  • Traffic study to develop geometric design, identification of turning lanes, parking lanes and bikeway/greenway locations
  • Horizontal alignment/schematic geometric design, including width and orientation of horizontal and vertical alignments, cross-section alternatives, and intersection improvements
  • Best Management Practice CP3 design and permitting

Final design tasks included street planting, landscape/urban design; sewers, water mains, lighting, traffic signals, street signs; construction staging, MPT; BMP CP-3 design; specifications, quantities, detailed cost estimate and bid documents.
