Rock Slope Protection Design

HAKS provided design and construction support services in support of the New York State Department of Transportation's efforts to enhance highway safety by protecting motorists from potential rockfalls in high-volume expressways in New York City. To mitigate this danger, HAKS assessed conditions using 3D stereo-compiled imaging and designed solutions tailored to 44 sites. These solutions included rock scaling and bolting, wire rope netting, concrete buttresses/shotcrete, and a state-of-the-art, energy-absorbing rockfall fencing system, the first of its kind to be installed in New York City. The fencing system was specifically designed to withstand rock impacts of up to 150 kip-feet of kinetic energy.

Services included topographic surveying and project mapping; right-of-way mapping; development of rock face cross-sections via three-dimensional stereo-compiled imaging; geological analysis of rock slope locations; and rock slope stabilization and protection design. We also performed bid analysis and design services during construction. Extensive participation in community meetings aided in providing aesthetically suitable designs, while maintaining a strong emphasis on cost-effectiveness and functionality.

The project received an ACEC New York Gold Award for Engineering Excellence.
