NYSBA Biennial Bridge Inspections

New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York State Bridge Authority

HAKS provided biennial inspection services under various contracts from 2002 to 2013. This $250,000/year project included routine and in-depth inspections of the six NYSBA bridges spanning the Hudson River from Westchester County to Columbia County—the Mid-Hudson and Bear Mountain Suspension Bridges, the Newburgh-Beacon and Rip Van Winkle Thru Truss Bridges and the Kingston-Rhinecliff Deck Truss Bridge.

Project highlights included:

  • Deteriorated bottom cover plates of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge South Span bottom chords led to a structural steel rehabilitation contract.
  • A frozen wind tongue at the Mid-Hudson Bridge led to the replacement of the pin at the East Tower.
  • Surface corrosion in the Mid-Hudson anchorage chambers led to dehumidification in the chambers.
  • Retaining wall movements detected during biennial inspections at the Bear Mountain Bridge prompted construction of an additional retaining wall.
  • West Main Tower deflections at the Bear Mountain Bridge led to the installation of support cables from the top of the tower to the anchorage.
