First Precinct Police Station

The new $10.3 million police precinct house in Baldwin, New York, is dedicated to "the brave men and women of the Nassau County Police Department, past, present and future."  Replacing a building built in the 1930s, the structure is built with precast concrete wall panels and columns, and precast concrete floor planks. The exterior wall panels are cast with three colors of brick finish molded into the exterior concrete surface. The brick patterns are combined with precast concrete bands, concrete panels and a polished granite base to provide an aesthetically pleasing façade design.

The 25,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art station house includes a dedicated line-up room, multiple private interview areas, a turnout room, a break room, a detective squad area, office space and an exercise gym for the officers. Sustainability includes energy efficiency, durability and environmental quality of the building without impacting the cost of construction. The structure with its two parking lots serves as a prototype for future Nassau County precincts.

As construction manager, HAKS’ services included master planning the construction sequencing, scheduling and as-builts; best value contracting strategy; phased demolition of selected structures; site improvements and building information modeling. We managed four Wick’s Law prime contractors, ensuring coordination of all trades. We also oversaw removal of asbestos-containing materials and underground storage tanks. Another challenge was minimizing disturbance to ongoing activities of the First Precinct during construction and coordinating the move to the new building prior to demolition of the old building.

The project was completed on December 12, 2016. Ribbon cutting took place on January 26, 2017.
