North Railroad Street Water Mains and Sanitary and Storm Sewers

HAKS provided Resident Engineering Inspection for the North Railroad Street project in Staten Island for the New York City Department of Design and Construction. The $34.7 million project involved the installation of 3 miles of new and replacement water distribution mains and hydrants; 3 miles of new sanitary sewers; and 3 miles of new storm sewers, catch basins, curbs, pedestrian ramps, landscaping and Best Management Practice structures. The construction, in the Annadale section of Staten Island, is bounded by Arden Avenue, Posen Street, North Railroad Street, Albee Avenue and Drumgoole Road East. Also included is a $3 million improvement of the Sweet Brook stream and culvert system through this area. Over 300 homes and 20 businesses were able to abandon their septic systems and connect to the new sanitary sewers, relieving area flooding problems.

The most challenging aspect of the two-year project was the construction of 9 miles of pipe work in a mixed business/residential area. The contractor maintained three mainline crews and two follow-up crews from project commencement. Residents and businesses were kept fully informed through meetings and written notices, resulting in full community cooperation.
