National Highway Authority of India Construction Program

HAKS is providing safety consultancy services to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to support its $2.23 billion highway construction program. The first assignment encompasses 15 highway projects covering 1,200 kilometers (744 miles) in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Under a separate contract, HAKS is providing safety consultancy services to the NHAI for three highway construction projects covering 437 kilometers (272 miles) in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.  A third contract with NHAI involves providing safety consultancy services for four lanes of Maharashtra/Karnataka to Sangareddy sections, a total of 145 kilometers (90 miles).

We are auditing the safety of these highways and providing highway safety design, construction zone safety evaluation, accident analysis, accident hazard elimination, and safety improvement recommendations. Our project team includes road safety auditors, work zone auditors, and traffic planners. The public-private partnership construction program is advancing under a design-build-finance-operate project delivery method.

HAKS’ safety audits follow NHAI methodologies, check lists and procedures. Development audits collect accident data, analyze fatal/serious injury accidents, carry out design-stage road safety audits, and include draft and final safety reports. Construction audits inspect project highways, report quarterly safety audits and road safety, collect accident data, and analyze fatal accidents and countermeasures. Work zone safety audits examine traffic management; traffic safety, including site and worker safety; structural construction; fire, electrical and mechanical safety; dust control; toxic and hazardous materials; and emergency response.
