Harlem Hospital Center Redevelopment

New York City<br style='line-height:2px'>Dormitory Authority of the State of New York

HAKS, in joint venture, served as Construction Manager during the initial phases of the $250 million redevelopment of the Harlem Hospital Center in Manhattan. The joint venture managed multiple design consultants and construction contractors.

This major modernization on behalf of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation program provides a state-of-the-art health care facility for the Harlem community. The hospital remained in operation throughout the 6-year demolition and construction period.

Our work focused on removal, preservation and storage of historically significant interior wall murals in buildings known as the Old and New Nurses Residences (ONR, NNR) and Women’s Pavilion (WP). The joint venture also coordinated the services of the mural architect and conservator during removal and storage. These significant works of art are important to the Harlem Community. The $22 million project also included demolition of an emergency medical services building, as well as the ONR, NNR and WP in a phased vacancy schedule and construction of a 400-car parking garage and integrated EMS facility.

Important considerations included logistical site access planning, utility relocation, value engineering, and community outreach.
