Bryant Avenue Bridge over Amtrak and CSX Railroad

HAKS is providing Resident Engineering Inspection services for the rehabilitation of the Bryant Avenue Bridge over Amtrak and CSX Railroad tracks in Bronx, New York for NYCDOT. This $7 million project involves the replacement of the steel superstructure and rehabilitation of the existing structure by removing and replacing a top portion of concrete abutment to accommodate the new superstructure.

HAKS performed a constructability review of the project, providing an independent review of the contractor’s superstructure demolition plan along with CPM review of schedule and updates, public outreach liaison, and material testing.

Subsequent work will comprise the installation of a temporary shield, removal of the entire bridge superstructure and top of the existing abutments for replacement with elastomeric bearings, and new superstructures and approach slabs as well as inspecting the bridge closure for MPT. Additional work includes the installation of a 7-inch reinforced HP concrete deck over pre-stressed concrete box beams, removal of two existing water mains and replacement with 12-inch water mains and utilities. New concrete sidewalk and bridge rail, with a solid metal shield, will be installed on the pedestrian bridge to replace an existing chain link fence and bridge rail. Approaches to the bridge will be reconstructed and new pavement markings, roadway signs, and new street lighting installed. HAKS will ensure the selective removal of bridge paint and proper disposal prior to demolition.
