2013-2018 Massachusetts DOT Statewide Bridge Inspections

Massachusetts<br style='line-height:2px'>Massachusetts Department of Transportation

HAKS is providing bridge inspection and evaluation services on state, county and local bridges throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The project consists of routine, fracture-critical, special member, freeze-thaw and emergency inspections and updating of inventory data. The bridges to be inspected are determined by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) on an on-call basis. In some cases, structures may be assigned with as little as two weeks’ notice prior to the beginning of the inspection cycle month, requiring HAKS to provide multiple inspection teams on short notice.

Work includes reviewing previous inspection reports, plans, and as-built drawings; planning, scheduling and coordinating access and equipment; scheduling and conducting hands-on field inspections; coordinating with MassDOT District Bridge Engineers and their contractors; reporting deficiencies (supplemented by sketches and photographs); preparing bridge inspection reports within MassDOT’s Bridge Inspection Database (4D); quality assurance review of fieldwork; quality control of inspection reports prior to submission; preparing Structural Inventory and Appraisal sheets; element-level evaluations (formerly PONTIS evaluations); and, if necessary, recommending repairs that could affect the safety and well-being of the public.

Project Highlights

  • During inspection of a multi-girder bridge carrying I-195, significant section loss was found on two girders over the bearings at the piers. The fascia girder was crippled and bowed with cracks along the bottom of the web and some perforations. MassDOT was notified of the condition immediately. MassDOT maintenance was able to utilize HAKS’ access equipment (UBIU-60) and install timber blocking and steel shims as a temporary measure until permanent repairs could be performed.
  • During inspection of a bridge carrying I-95 over Route 3, the team found four girders with cracks in the webs.
