Con Edison Astoria Facility Sanitary Sewer System

Queens, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>Con Edison

HAKS designed a new sanitary sewer system for the Con Edison Astoria Facility in Queens under its on-call contract with the utility. The contract includes the evaluation of conceptual design alternatives based on previous studies and current site conditions and design criteria. Preliminary design, final design and complete contract documents with the engineer’s estimate and agency permitting were included.

The design required connection of five existing operations buildings and future area connections to an on-site sanitary sewer for eventual discharge to the combined sewer system on 21st Street. Options included gravity sewers, pump/force mains and a combination of both gravity and force main systems. Horizontal directional drilling was also considered.

Test pits were dug to determine potential interferences with site utilities. The operational logistics of working on site, combined with environmental considerations for specialized excavation, were major considerations. Throughout the design period, HAKS met with Con Edison design and operations personnel to determine a viable route that considered both horizontal and vertical obstructions.
