Bush Terminal Strategic Plan Study

Brooklyn, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York City Economic Development Corporation

HAKS provided urban design services and building condition assessments for the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) as part of a team developing a plan of action to capitalize on and maximize the potential of the historical 200-acre Bush Terminal site in Brooklyn as a 21st century industrial complex.

HAKS conducted condition assessments—including structural, civil, and MEP services—for 15 multi-story, tenant-occupied facilities and surrounding grounds. The complex was investigated for engineering adequacy and feasibility for future use by evaluating and classifying existing structures and infrastructure based on a visual survey and NYCEDC documentation. Buildings and other structures were classified according to potential for adaptive reuse, renovation, replacement/reconstruction, or removal.

HAKS also prepared final documentation of structural conditions, including a general description of each building’s structural system; overall conditions of structural members; major structural deficiencies that could potentially be critical in determining the feasibility of a building’s future use; and photographic documentation of conditions observed.

The assessments helped the NYCEDC to identify the types of businesses and activities that might be feasible on the grounds of Bush Terminal. With input from the NYCEDC, the engineering and construction advisory team helped vet potential projects and development phasing strategies with the project team to determine their viability and feasibility.
