Elmhurst Hospital Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department Renovation

Prior to joining HAKS, Jeff Terzakis, as Senior Director in the Office of Facilities for New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, was responsible for ensuring that this $14 million project was brought in under budget and on time. Mr. Terzakis oversaw the three-level, 32,000-square-foot expansion that nearly doubled the size of the adjacent existing emergency room clinical space on the ground level and provided room on the new second floor for future ambulatory surgery and women’s options services. The basement level provided space for storage, cleaning and building support services.

As a part of the new expansion, separate entrances and waiting areas were provided for both the adult and pediatric emergency departments. In addition, the capacity of the observation/holding area was increased from nine to 16 beds, and a new four-bed observation area was provided for pediatric service.

Among the various features built into the project was a curved curtain wall that completely enclosed the waiting area. Careful phasing and coordination of the construction allowed uninterrupted, continuous operation of the existing Emergency Department throughout the entire work period. The project was successfully completed on time and under budget.
