Betsy Head Memorial Park

Brooklyn, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York City Department of Parks and Recreation

Engineering services for the Betsy Head Memorial Park include water and drainage design that requires a new sanitary sewer site connection application from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), electrical and structural design and preparation of a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan.

Water engineering design services comprise a new water service wet connection for the park from an existing main in an adjacent street for two drinking fountains, irrigation and a children's water-play pop-up spray shower. HAKS, as a team member, is designing the required water supply piping to support these features with a water booster pump and providing the drainage design according to the latest NYCDEP Best Management Practices to handle storm water runoff on site via a subsurface detention/retention system. Drainage design includes improvements such as additional drain inlets and new subsurface detention/retention piping. Runoff from the water play feature is required to drain to a sanitary sewer for which a new site connection is necessary.

The water play feature requires a new Con Edison service connection to the park from an adjacent street. HAKS is preparing the load requirements and is coordinating with both Con Edison and an NYCDPR field maintenance representative on site to determine a location for a property line box. HAKS is applying for the new electrical service on behalf of NYCDPR.

Structural design work includes an elevated walkway and concrete approach ramps. HAKS is preparing calculations that include specifications, plans, elevations and details for the elevated walkway. This work includes a layout in conjunction with the NYCDPR that takes into account tree-critical and absolute root zones.
