New York City Post-Hurricane Sandy Rapid Repairs Program

HAKS responded quickly to the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused throughout New York City by providing building inspections, assessments and contractor monitoring services in support of the NYC Rapid Repairs program in Far Rockaway, Queens; Coney Island, Brooklyn; and Staten Island. In less than 24 hours, HAKS mobilized and dispatched approximately 70 inspectors and monitors as part of a major 24/7 field operation to conduct inspections and assessments of homes and businesses as well as monitor contractors’ delivery of services. HAKS’ inspection teams worked seven days a week in 12-hour shifts combing through systematic grids in assigned neighborhoods.

HAKS implemented a well-coordinated field documentation and data control and delivery system. The firm outfitted trailers with mobile WiFi and equipped inspectors with computer tablets and video cameras, thereby enabling inspectors to document inspections and report field findings in real time to the firm’s New York City and Ossining, NY, offices. This streamlined data collection and reporting system greatly helped align material confirmation, installation and project delivery.

Within a relatively brief period in the aftermath of this destructive storm, HAKS inspected and assessed 4,000 buildings throughout Far Rockaway and Coney Island and 800 buildings in Staten Island.
