Newark Liberty International Airport Condition Survey

As part of a call-in contract with The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, HAKS performed a condition inspection of seven buildings at Newark Liberty International Airport totaling approximately 1.4 million square feet of floor space. Our inspections included the four-level, 1.3-million-square-foot Terminal C Parking Garage and emergency structural inspections of various facilities in the wake of Hurricane Irene in 2011.

The parking decks are constructed of precast, pre-stressed concrete double tee beams on concrete beams and columns. Structural steel framing and cast-in-place concrete decking supplement the precast framing at the north and south sides, above the ramp access locations and at the overhanging projections above Airport Loop Road.  The building has two helical entrance ramps at the southeast corner and a helical exit ramp at the center of the south side.

Detailed in-depth inspections—including 100% visual and 10% hands on—were conducted of all structural items, including facades, roofs and interior elements, to locate and document deficiencies. Several immediate action repairs were recommended and confirmed when completed.  Repair recommendations were listed in order of priority in the four categories defined by PANYNJ: immediate, priority, safety and routine. Our inspectors also documented the status of previous priority repairs and safety items and evaluated their conditions at the time of inspection.

We reported our findings in a comprehensive condition inspection report and prepared drawings that showed all deficiencies, their locations, proposed repairs and other required information.
