Kings and Richmond Counties Bridge Inspections

New York City<br style='line-height:2px'>New York State Department of Transportation

HAKS performed inspections of 420 bridges (over 2,200 spans) using seven inspection teams throughout Kings and Richmond counties. The structures ranged from simple one-span to large multi-span bridges such as the North Portland Avenue Viaduct and the Kosciuszko Bridge on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. We also inspected lift and draw bridges, including NYCT, LIRR, Conrail, New York & Atlantic Railway, and Staten Island Rapid Transit. Field work was often complicated by numerous ongoing large-scale reconstruction projects such as the Belt Parkway Bridge and Staten Island Ferry Terminal reconstruction.

The contract called for 24/7 on-call emergency support that was necessary for situations ranging from loose overhead concrete, to car fires on top of bridges, to a fallen billboard on the BQE in the middle of rush hour. HAKS performed emergency inspections for bridges that suffered shock from the 2011 earthquake and flood damage during Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

We issued 721 flags (279 in 2011 and 442 in 2012). The multi-span Kosciuszko Bridge was inspected three times during these two years.
