Tappan Zee Bridge

Rockland/Westchester, New York<br style='line-height:2px'>New York State Thruway Authority

The Tappan Zee Bridge crosses the Hudson River at one of its widest points, connecting South Nyack in Rockland County with Tarrytown in Westchester County in the Lower Hudson Valley. HAKS provided Construction Inspection services for this $29 million steel repair project for the New York State Thruway Authority. The 50-year-old cantilever bridge required work on various components to ensure its structural integrity and enable it to remain a vital link in the regional transportation network. HAKS had first-hand knowledge of the client’s structural concerns because we had conducted the most recent biennial inspection of the bridge.

Construction support services focused on a structural analysis of the temporary platforms and railroad shielding. In order to ensure that the temporary construction loads did not overstress the deck truss members, the deck trusses were modeled and the loads applied to the as-inspected section properties of the various members.

We oversaw the repair/replacement of diaphragms, catwalks, deck trusses, floor beams, main trusses, fascia girders, stringers, gusset plates and bracings. Repair work concentrated on the north and south outside fascia girders, first interior stringers and cantilevered diaphragm beams, and floor beam and main truss members in spans 179 through 191 of the East Deck truss spans. Miscellaneous steel repairs were made to gusset plates, wind bracing, catwalk and utility support members.
